Policy & Regulatory Reform

KSLG has advised various government departments, agencies and special interest groups in the Middle East on legal reform programs and has assisted with the drafting of regulations and legislation in relation to the following areas of law:

- environmental law;
- corporate and commercial law;
- banking and finance law;
- real estate and construction law;
- taxes and duties;
- employment law;
- customs law;
- privacy law;
- intellectual property and information technology law; and
- bankruptcy and insolvency law.

Recently, KSLG advised Deloitte (formerly Bearing Point) on the USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ), a USD 90 million project aimed at enhancing public and private sector productivity and economic reform in Jordan. Areas advised on as part of this project included trade and investment, financial markets, enhanced productivity and the removal of government constraints. The work provided under this program included drafting and amending laws and regulations, preparing position reports and setting up EDAMA (the energy, water and environment association).

KSLG also assisted the Jordanian government with the restructuring of the Free Zones Corporation and the Jordan Industrial Estates Corporation.

In addition to assisting governments directly with policy and regulatory reform, KSLG has organised and participated in various round tables, conferences and seminars that aim at raising awareness around legal issues (with a focus on intellectual property, information technology, electronic commerce and various corporate law issues) within the judiciary, the police, the customs, and other enforcement bodies. We have organized what is considered one of the biggest intellectual property conferences in the region in Abu Dhabi in January 2008 in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, under the patronage of Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The firm also launched the regional Arab IP Center in collaboration with the League of Arab States and Microsoft. The firm also organised a conference during the summer of 2007 on cyber crime in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice under the patronage of the Ministry of Justice. We regularly participate in the events organised by the Institute of Training & Judicial Studies to speak to judges and the public prosecution about various legal matters as part of their trainings on recent developments in the legal field.
